Janesville’s 41st CROP Hunger Walk: April 29, 2018: Walk. Give. Change the World.

April 29, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Walk. Give. Change the World.
Janesville’s 41st CROP Hunger Walk

We like to think of it this way. The CROP Hunger Walk is the heart and “sole” of Janesville. It is the only event that brings together all members of our community – young and old, all faiths and all walks of life for a common goal – to end hunger one step at a time!

Mark your calendar for Janesville’s 41st CROP Hunger Walk to be held on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at Cargill United Methodist Church, 2000 Wesley Avenue, Janesville. Registration begins at 1:00 p.m., and the walk/run starts at 1:30 p.m. There is no registration fee, but CROP Hunger Walk donations are gratefully accepted to help raise funds for local and worldwide hunger relief.

Janesville’s local food pantry, ECHO, will be the recipient of 25% of the funds raised from this year’s event. In addition, ECHO will collect boxes of Mac & Cheese and jars of Peanut Butter on the day of the event to help families during the summer months when donations tend to drop off. The remaining funds will fight hunger internationally through the efforts of Church World Service.

Choose to walk or run on our new ½ mile, 1 mile, 5K, or 10K route. Walk/run the portion of the route most comfortable to you. Water is provided along the way. The most important thing is your participation.

Leashed dogs may accompany walkers/runners, and there will be treats for registrants after the walk/run.

What does CROP stand for?

When CROP began in 1947 (under the wing of Church World Service), CROP was an acronym for the Christian Rural Overseas Program. Its primary mission was to help Midwest farm families share their grain with hungry neighbors in post-World War II Europe and Asia. Today, we have outgrown the acronym, but we retain it as the historic name of the program. CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by religious groups, businesses, schools, and others to end hunger at home and around the world.

Church World Service (CWS) continues to be passionate about ensuring sustainable access to proper, nutritious food, supporting more than 2,000 communities across the United States participating in more than 1,000 CROP Hunger Walks each year. More than five million CROP Hunger Walkers have joined in more than 36,000 CROP Hunger Walks in the last two decades alone.

On October 17, 1969, a thousand people in Bismarck, ND, walked in what may have been the first-ever CROP Hunger Walk – and raised $25,000 to help stop hunger. Several other CROP Hunger Walks occurred soon thereafter, and before long, there were hundreds of Walks each year in communities nationwide.

With its birth in 1969, CROP Hunger Walks are “viewed by many as the granddaddy of charity walks,” notes the Los Angeles Times (October 26, 2009).
