TOM & JERRY TIME

TOM & JERRY TIME

By Mike Austin ( Contact )   December 12, 2007

Well, it's Christmas and that means Tom & Jerrys! Ever since I was a kid, I equate the Holidays with Tom & Jerrys. That sweet, spicey, hot concoction that warms the bod and personifies "Holiday Cheer". Some of my favorite memories are of my Dad making Tom & Jerrys in the kitchen while we all unwrapped presents. Dad was a cool guy who had lots of friends. From just before Christmas up through New Years, our house was always full of family and friends dropping by for a Tom & Jerry. I found this pic of my Dad (from the mid '70's) making a batch of Tom & Jerrys. Now, keep in mind, Dad probably had 2 or 3 "T & Js" already and was prone to mugging for the camera.!Image So the other night I made trip to the store for the brandy, rum, powdered sugar(2 lbs!) cloves, etc. and tonight I will continue the Austin tradition. If I see ya this Christmas season...let's have a Tom & Jerry. Do you have a family food or drink you just gotta have at this time of year?

A wonton is made with a thin ten centimeter square lye-water pastry wrapper made of wheat flour, water, salt, and lye, and filled with savory minced meat. The filling is typically made of:

Minced pork
Coarsely diced or whole shrimp
Finely minced ginger and onions
Sesame oil and soy sauce.

So yes, little Chinese dumplings! They're delicious! Our tradition is to get together in the afternoon on Christmas Eve and the ladies make like 100 of these wontons. Then we all go to Church and come back and fry up the wontons and relax in the hot tub with our favorite beverage. It doesn't get much better than that!

Well, I see silly runs in the family. As far as family food or drink, every Christmas eve our family goes to Grandma's and we make popcorn balls. The thrill is that it just isn't Christmas until someone gets scalded by the hot syrup you pour over the popcorn...and of course butter fights. Lol we have a little silly in our family too, and drinking.

OK...I gotta ask...what is a Wonton? Is this like the fried wonton I get at the buffet? Brandy Slush, I can only assume is exactly what it sounds like. Sounds festive!

Christmas just isn't complete without wontons and brandy slushes.
