Bring Brett Back

Bring Brett Back

By Justin Brown ( Contact )   July 14, 2008

Brett Favre wants to play football again. Let him play. It's a no brainer.

But the Packers "top brass" are reluctant to let him back in the door. At least not as their starter. Why?

Is it true that the relationship between Packers GM Ted Thompson and Brett Favre is not as good as some would have you to believe? Both have denied having any "issues" with the other in past interviews. GM Ted Thompson has gone as far as saying he's "always wanted Brett to come back."

Now however we're hearing from Brett's family & friends, including his own mother that Mr. Thompson has been 'pushing the issue of retirement' with Brett for the last couple of years and that the relationship between the two isn't as "cushy" as some thought.

So is it any wonder, that Ted now tells Brett, "Um...sorry. We're going a different direction." Could it be that Ted Thompson has wanted nothing more than to be able to shed the Packers past of Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgreen, and yes boys and girls, a Packers team without Brett Favre, all along?

If you were in Brett's shoes and kept hearing over and over for the last 2 years from both the media and his own coaches and staff, "are you retiring?", "don't you think it's time to hang up the cleats?", or "we need a decision from you soon", wouldn't you feel some extra pressure? I know I sure would.

How many times have you made a decision and then thought better of it soon after you made it? I know I sure have.

I don't blame GM Ted Thompson for wanting to create his own success with the Packers with his new "head coach" Mike McCarthy (whom he hired) along with the new quarterback Aaron Rogers (whom Ted drafted), but I think he's letting his pride, or maybe his own ego get in the way.

I can care less if Brett changed his mind 50 million times from the end of March until this past 4th of July holiday. Should Brett have jerked the Packers around? Absolutely not. Is Brett showing he has a bit of an ego? Maybe so. But the point his, he deserves the right to change his mind and his mind is made up now. The season has not started and he wants to play. Let him play.

But that won't happen. Ted Thompson is not allowing it. He made the decision for Brett when he didn't deal with a text from Brett saying he he wanted to be reinstated. By not dealing with it, he dealt with it. And it sent a very clear message to Brett. No wonder he wants to be released.

If I hear from one more fan or sports analyst about how the Packers need to move on without Brett Favre "for the future of the Packers", I could scream.

The future? Are you kidding me? How many coaches have given a prep talk in the locker room before a big game saying, "Well guys, I sure hope we win tonight...but remember, even if we don't we're preparing for our future!"

The NFL is a business. The number 1 goal of any team is to win championships! To get to the Superbowl and to WIN the Superbowl. Yes you need to prepare for the future. But what if the future is now?

Brett Favre gives the Green Bay Packers their best shot at achieving any of the following I just mentioned above.

The future is today.

Tomorrow is not promised and no one knows what the future holds.

Bring Brett back as the Packers starting quarterback. It's really that simple.

Thanks for the comments Ray. However, after the interview with Brett on Fox News Channel "On The Record" with Gretta, I'm not sure I feel any better about the situation. I think BOTH parties made some bad mistakes, and some that may be unfixable.

How could the Packers have the nerve to even suggest that Brett would want or expect to be back up to aron? the face of the Packers for the last 16 years has been BRett Favre!!! Not Ted Thompson, Mike Mcarthy, or Mark Murphy. I wonder how quickly they would change their tune if the Attendance @ Lambeau dropped by 20% for the first Home Games?
