Orioles & Hummingbirds

Orioles & Hummingbirds

By Justin Brown ( Contact )   May 5, 2008

I've been "lucky" enough to attract some hummingbirds to my feeders the last couple of summers, but one bird has been eluding me. The Oriole.

I saw a few last summer, but never got them to hang around consistently. I've got an Oriole feeder. It has a place for 2 orange halves on each side and a jar in the middle for either grape jelly or oriole nector.

I've come to find out, the grape jelly works best. At least I think it does. What little I saw of them last summer, that's what they seemed to like.

Any suggestions or tricks as to how I can attract more?

We did see 1 hummingbird already this summer. Just before that 'cold snap.' We haven't seen her since. I'm sure they'll be buzzing around our house soon.

Hey JB,

I just found out from this website (http://www.hummingbirds.net) that orioles prey on hummingbirds. One would think that if you are getting hummingbirds, you'd naturally get the orioles... of course, they might EAT your little guys...

Ack!

(Hopefully, I'm reading this wrong...)
