The Janesville City Manager’s move to take over control of the local cable access channel JATV is about adding relevance to what he calls an underutilized asset.
Kevin Lahner says JATV is funded by franchise fees and state aid so it would be a management decision.
Lahner says unfortunately JATV doesn’t produce enough original programming to fill up a week so it’s currently airing a lot of dated programs like public events from several years ago.
He says combining his staff with JATV’s will allow for the production of more new content distributed on a wider set of platforms.
The proposal came to light in an email from Lahner to council members answering questions about the budget. The Hedberg Public Library Board of Trustees currently oversees JATV.
