Three Rock County townships are asking voters to make certain offices appointed positions rather than elected ones.

Similar questions will appear on ballots in the towns of Clinton, La Prairie and Porter next week asking whether the clerks and/or treasurers in those townships should be appointed by town boards rather than elected by town residents.

Allan Arndt and Dave Brandl, the chairmen of the La Prairie and Clinton boards, respectively, say it has become more difficult to find qualified people who live in their towns and who are willing to take on the work. That’s in part because of an aging rural population, a younger population that’s less likely to do such community service, and because the duties of clerks and treasurers are becoming more complex.

The chairmen say giving boards appointment authority would provide the flexibility to recruit people who live outside of a township to do those jobs.

Arndt says La Prairie would appoint the current clerk and treasurer to continue in their roles and that ideally, appointment candidates would live in the town.
