A Rock County bat tests positive for rabies.

Rock County Public Health says the state hygiene lab tested the animal and confirmed the infection.

While no human contact with this bat has been reported, the health department says bats are the most common carrier of rabies in Wisconsin. Others include skunks, raccoons, foxes and coyotes.

The department offers the following rabies precautions: avoiding contact with wild or stray animals, knowing rabies symptoms in animals like excessive drooling or aggression, teaching kids not to touch unfamiliar animals, keeping pets’ vaccinations up to date, and bat-proofing your home.

People who come into contact with wildlife or unfamiliar animals, especially if bitten or scratched, should seek medical care as soon as possible.
