Problem intersection in Milton could soon have four-way stop signs

The Milton Common Council votes to put four-way stop signs at the intersection of Madison Avenue and John Paul Road.

Currently, only cars on John Paul Road have to stop. The intersection as configured was the site of 21 crashes between 2018 and 2022. Ten of those resulted in injuries.

Because of that crash history, the Department of Transportation has proposed putting in a compact urban roundabout, but that project wouldn’t be done until 2030.

In the meantime, the city wanted to try something to enhance safety at the intersection.

The state does have to sign off on the city’s stop sign plan because Madison Avenue carries Highway 59 through the city.

A four-way stop or stoplights could be long-term alternatives to a roundabout, an idea that has met some early resistance. Mayor Eric Stockman says putting in the stop signs now could provide more data as state and local officials consider what comes next.
