Janesville Fire Department officials say a wood stove on a porch caused a fire that destroyed an east side house Monday morning, leaving a family displaced.

Rock County 911 Communications Center, the call to the 400 block of Forest Park Boulevard came in just after 10:30 a.m. Monday.

A neighbor told a Big Radio reporter a family with school-age kids and multiple pets live in the home. It’s a two-story wood frame house near Roosevelt Elementary School.

Janesville Deputy Fire Chief John McManus says fire officials think the blaze broke out from a wood stove that’s set up in an attached porch on the main level of the house.

The fire is being considered accidental. It caused $300,000 in damage, the fire department reports.

The fire department says no residents were home when it caught fire. They’re all accounted for and are safe. No firefighters were injured. The family is displaced, and Red Cross is assisting them.

Firefighters said they had not located one of several pets known to have been in the house.

A neighbor and staff at Roosevelt School apparently reported the fire.
