The City of Beloit won’t hand out any more licenses for liquor stores for the next six months.

The city council voted this week to approve a temporary moratorium on Class A licenses for carryout alcohol sales.

The city wants to use the time to review potential changes to its license regulations because of concerns over binge drinking and unsupervised, underage youth having access to alcohol.

The moratorium does not apply to other classes of liquor licenses for bars, restaurants and other businesses.

Any new or pending Class A license applications will be taken and addressed in order once the six months expire or if the council changes the timeline.

The city’s alcohol beverage and licensing committee is planning to hold joint workshops with the city council to discuss the issue.
