The attorney for one of two suspects in a June shooting at a Janesville-area strip club argues his client was defending himself when he exchanged gunfire with the other suspect.

23-year-old Jaquczeas Wiggins is charged in Rock County Court with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless injury and three counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Rock County Sheriff’s Detective Luke DuCharme testified at Wiggins preliminary hearing Monday that surveillance footage showed Wiggins leaving the Blu Astor Cabaret, retrieving a firearm from his vehicle and returning to the entrance of the club.

Defense lawyer Matthew Lantta said Wiggins was shot at first and returned fire as he again backed away from the building.

DuCharme said 23 shots were fired between Wiggins and the other suspect, 27-year-old Damont Green, but they attribute approximately 15 of the shots to Wiggins’ handgun, which was never recovered.

Four people were injured as a result of the shooting. Wiggins and Green are both being held in the Rock County Jail on $50,000 cash bonds.
